Most missed deals come from a handful of common habits, not from bad luck. The good news is that each one is easy to fix once you notice it. Here are five mistakes that make shoppers miss a sale or overpay, and what to do instead.

1. Checking prices by hand

Refreshing a page every day is tiring, and it is unreliable. You will forget on the busy days, and the price will drop on exactly the day you do not look. Prices can rise again within hours.

An alert does the watching for you. Set it once and let it tell you when something happens.

2. Not knowing the usual price

Without a baseline you cannot tell a deal from a normal price. A banner might say "limited time offer" on a product that has been at that price for months.

Spend a few minutes looking at the history, or track the product for a couple of weeks. Knowing the range changes how you see every sale.

3. Setting an unrealistic target

If your target is far below anything the item has ever sold for, you will never get an alert. Then you either give up or buy impulsively at a price that was fine all along.

Pick a number that has been reached before, or is close to it. You can always lower it later.

4. Ignoring shipping, taxes and fees

A low price with high shipping is not low. Some retailers lower the product price and raise the delivery fee, and some add handling charges at checkout. Compare the total you will actually pay.

Also check delivery times. A cheaper option that arrives three weeks later may not be worth it.

5. Waiting too long once it drops

Good prices can end quickly or sell out, especially for popular items. When your alert fires, open the page and check the details: the seller, the version, the condition and the total cost. If all of that matches what you wanted, decide and buy.

Doing your thinking in advance, with a target price, is what makes this fast.

A bonus mistake: buying what you do not need

The best way to save on something is not to buy it. A sale is not a reason to buy. Before you add an item to your cart, ask whether you would buy it at full price. If the answer is no, skip it.
